Beating the Winter BluesWith the advent of shorter daylight hours, and long winter nights, people often experience mental health changes. Seasonal affective disorders rise dramatically at this time of year, as does general depression. Melancholia and sadness can paralyze the creative, inventive parts of the mind, leaving one inert and unproductive. The World Health Organization has predicted that by the year 2020, depression will be the most debilitating disease, on a global scale. Women, in particular are susceptible to this compromising and serious mental health challenge. People with depression often have a deficiency in the brain neurotransmitter, Serotonin, which helps promote feelings of well-being, confidence, and a zest for life. Often, the treatment of choice for depression is medications, such as Prozac. Antidepressants, like Prozac can be helpful to some people, but also makes users susceptible to other serious side-effects, such as depressed libido, insomnia, restlessness, anorexia, nausea, paranoia, and sometimes, even depression! St. John's Wort A beautiful little yellow flower, called St. John's Wort has gained worldwide attention for it's effectiveness for depression in many people, with no side effects. It also relieves insomnia and anxiety. The average dose is 300 mg. three times a day. If you're feeling blue, give it a try! You'll be amazed!

Giving Strengthens The HeartThe Yule season is quickly approaching, and with it a myriad of shopping trips and gift giving plans. This can be an exhausting drain on our energy, or serve as a boost to our heart's inner power. It all depends on our approach. Before you even start to plan what to give for Christmas, allow yourself time to sit back, close your eyes, and reflect. Feel the energy of each person on your list, and what they mean to you. What is it that makes them special in your life? This can even apply to people who you feel obligated to buy a gift for, but who don't exactly make your heart sing with joy. Whether they are a distant relative who you are expected to reciprocate a gift with, or the boss you don't feel very comfortable with - they each have a lesson for your heart. Remember, no one is in your life without a reason - you attract every person you know to you, with your energy and need for life lessons. As you savor each person's energy, whether loved one or acquaintance, try to appreciate what lessons they have given to you. How have they helped you grow? To open your heart? To face life a little wiser? Once you've tuned into the gift of the heart given by each, choose a gift you can afford but one that conveys the unique, sacred energy of each. Plan to do your shopping when you are well-rested, and at the time of day where your energy is highest. As you browse, remember your reflection on that person, and let this energy guide you to the perfect gift. If you can shop with thankfulness and warmth - your holiday season will be more relaxed, enjoyable, and can actually heal your heart! Giving to those less fortunate than us, is also a wonderful tonic for the heart. Why not encourage your family or friends to join you in "adopting" a struggling family this holiday season - you could bring a miracle to someone who is likely praying earnestly for one!

Tuning into the EnergiesAs adult women, we are all quite adept at managing our daily lives. We adapt to routines, rise to the occasion, keep schedules, and tend to a million different duties. We live our lives in responsibility and competence. We know our jobs, and do them the best we know how. We are strong, we can be relied on. How many of us though, are aware of who walks with us? We are all connected to other beings, not only people, but beings seen only with multidimensional eyes, and heard in the inner recesses of our core. How many of you have had a conversation with your Guides, your Angels, your Higher Self? There is a rich communion occurring each moment of your life on deeper levels of your being - intimate contact with protective, healing, and loving guardian spirits. Some may scoff, but others have described the joy and attunement they have felt as they tuned into the energies of these spirit companions. How often have you wished that you could share your burdens, or shed your cloak of responsiblity long enough to feel sheltered, comforted, or embraced by deep protective love and knowing? Or to converse with someone who knew your heart to the quick? Well, whether you are aware of it or not, you have these available to you, each moment of your life. Since you first peeked out from your cradle as a wee babe, you have been surrounded by loving, devoted guides - spirit beings involved in your development and growth in all ways. They've been there through each triumph, each tear, each transition, and each new beginning. Take time to meditate, and tune into these beings. You may begin to develop a conscious awareness of who these beings are in their own right. Not faceless shadows, but real, intelligent and compassionate entities, clothed in high vibrational bodies - with you NOW at this very instant. You are NEVER alone - relax, and enjoy your spirit family.
